cyanotype inspired ceramics

Statement

In this series Gabriela combines her background in analog photography with clay by creating pots inspired by the 20th century photographic process of cyanotypes or sun prints. These pieces are made through a process of layering blue underglaze onto a leather hard bowl. Using a sgraffito technique, Gabriela carved out various flowers, leaves, and other botanicals by hand to expose the underlying white clay body. The final piece is bisque fired, and the outer drawing is sealed with a clear glaze before its final firing and the inside glaze is brushed on by hand. The final application of glaze makes these pieces microwave and dishwasher safe.
